SRI GURU HARKRISHAN SR. SEC. PUBLIC SCHOOL G.T. ROAD (AMRITSAR)

Sri Guru Harkrishan Sr. Sec. Public School(Main), G.T. Road, Amritsar came into existence in 1967 in pursuance of the resolution adopted at the Sikh Educational Conference held at Bombay. The resolution underlined the need for the establishment of an English Medium Public School to meet the challenge of fast growing knowledge and linguistic equipment. The establishment of English medium schools was a new dream for the Chief Khalsa Diwan and Sri Guru Harkrishan Sr. Sec. Public School, G.T.Road, Amritsar, was the first school started by the organization. It was soon developed into a well organized centre of value-oriented education with an enlightened approach to the teaching of Sikh history, religion and Punjabi language. . The school has been giving excellent results of class X (since 1979) and +2 (since 1993). More than 100 students got selected in CET/PMT/NDA during the last three years only.

Aim & Objectives - The school was established with a view to providing the students with an opportunity to grow and develop in a modern, scientific way. It aims at imparting excellent education and trains the students to take their rightful place in life. To spread sound educational philosophy of the Sikh Gurus is also one of the aims of the institution. The school caters to the needs of the people by granting them access to value based education and prepares them for the challenges of the changing world through the encouragement of self discipline, high intellectual achievements and physical fitness. The school enjoys a very good reputation in this area as it is a trend setting institution.

Campus - Situated near the Railway Station on the G.T. Road, Amritsar, the school sprawls over 3 acres. The beautiful building comprises of 100 rooms including a big auditorium, four well-equipped laboratories, two richly stocked libraries, two music rooms, two computer centre, a conference hall, a big play ground, staff rooms, canteen, book shop etc. A well designed, well ventilated multipurpose hall is the centre of all the cultural activities and social gatherings. It is also used as an indoor games hall.

Teaching Staff - A well qualified and competent staff has been appointed which devotes its entire attention in fostering the fine tastes, faculties and instincts inherent in children. They undertake the responsibility of nurturing them into well disciplined students. A divinity teacher has especially been appointed for imparting religious education. Apart from this, we have regular workshops to train our teachers in order to enhance the quality of education and to promote their professional competence, so that a value-oriented place is created.

Pupils - Students from age group 3 Plus to 16 Plus are on the rolls. At present the strength of the students is more than 3100. The school is co-educational with a ratio of boys : girls :: 60 : 40.

Co-Curricular Activities - The student arc encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities which include Art & Craft, debates, declamation contests, exhibitions, dramas, light & sound shows, quiz competitions etc. The school conducts regular classes in several activities under the SUPW. Delors Commission has recommended the need for co-curricular activities. According to the Commission, "Education must be constructed around four pillars i.e. learning to know, Learning to do, Learning to be and Learning to live together." To implement it, house system is functioning very smoothly and various co-curricular activities like Qui/, Extempore, Debate, declamation, Exhibitions, Light and Sound Programmes, Plays are conducted. Inter & Intra House Competitions are organized regularly.

Affiliation of the School
- The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi and prepares students for the X and XII standard examinations. The streams offered at the +2 level are Science (Medical/ N.Medical), Commerce and Arts. Sports Facilities All the major indoor and outdoor games are available to the students. Physical Education is a compulsory activity in the school. The school provides the following games and sports :-

4. Kho-Kho
5. Volleyball
6. Taekwando
7. Fencing
8. Football Playgrounds for Hockey, Football and Cricket are available at Sri Guru Harkrishan International School, Ranjit Avenue, D-Block, Amritsar. In sports the school has produced more than 100 players who have participated at the National level in the last few years. Future Development Plans The Management has decided to provide the following facilities for the students in the current session.

4. Purchase of New Computer for Primary Section
5. Addition of Digital Cameras
6. A computer projector for the Senior Section
7. Purchase of another School Van
