Bhai Vir Singh Birdh Ghar was established in 1959, with three
inmates. Over the years this has become a major source of
sustenance and support to thousands senior citizens of the
area. It is located in natural and peaceful surroundings on
the Jandiala Road, Tarn Taran, and is being looked after by
the Local Committee of Chief Khalsa Diwan, with Dr. Ranbir
Singh as its President and S. Harbans Singh Kairon as its
Hony. Secretary. Apart from board and lodging, free medical
check up, treatment and medicine are provided to the inmates.
To keep the inmates busy and in high spirits a Library has
been established in the Birdh Ghar. Kirtan and Gurbani recitation
is a daily routine. Because of good work done by the Birdh
Ghar donations are pouring in from different individuals and
institutions. Recently a new block has been constructed. Because
of breaking down of traditional families senior citizens of
our society are facing growing psychological problems, insecurity
and loneliness.

The Central Khalsa Orphanage came into being in 1904 under the aegis of the Chief Khalsa Diwan, Amritsar, soon after the registration of the parent body that year. It was a happy outcome of a coincidence. S. Harbans Singh Attari, a scion of the proud and renowned family of General Sham Singh Attari was on his usual missionary tour in Sindh in 1903. He came across a child with none to take care of him. An embodiment of compassion and love, service and humanity, the great Sardar was moved to pity. He carried the idea of establishing an orphanage which with the consent and active cooperation of his noble colleagues, Sir Sunder Singh Majithia, Padam Bhushan Bhai Sahib Dr. Vir Singh and S. Tarlochan singh, the brain behind most of the Diwan's establishments and founder of the Punjab and Sind Bank Ltd., was translated into reality. The institution was set up in a rented house with this one single child and years later moved to its own present building on the Grand Trunk Road, near Putlighar crossing (Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk).
